The use of stable isotopes for diagnosis and clinical research.

چکیده
Stable, non-radioactive isotopes, so long overshadowed by radionuclides, have recently become much more widely used in clinical science. This renewed interest has been stimulated by improvements both in the increased availability and diversity of stable-isotopelabelled compounds and in mass-spectrometric methods for their quantitative analysis. In addition, there is an increasing awareness of the advantages of stable-isotope techniques for patient safety and applicability to clinical problems. The object of this review is to outline methods of stable-isotopic analysis and to survey the results of the application of 2H, 13C and 15N-labelled compounds in clinical research. Previous reviews on this topic have considered the use of 2H for the quantification of total body water and intercompartmental water movements, 13C for absorption and incorporation studies using fatty acids and triacylglycerols and 15N for metabolic studies with ammonia, urea, creatinine, uric acid and for quantitative haematological studies 11, 21. It is hoped that the present review will stimulate clinical interest in the potential use and scientific advantages of stable isotopes. In addition, we wish to emphasize the possible benefits of increased patient acceptability and applicability in cases where radioisotope measurements are impossible.

The isotopic documents of lake deposition are suitable potential means for studyingthe intercontinental, environmental and climatic conditions. In order to study theenvironmental and climatic conditions of Parishan area in Fars province in Holocene, a Corewas taken with the length of 2m from the Parishan lake sediment. From this core, kernel timeseries was provided from documents of carbon and ...

Stable isotopes (Deuterium and Oxygen-18) have a broad application in many of water related sciences. Precipitation is the most important input to the water cycle which shows considrable spatial and temporal variability in its isotope content. To study the precipitation isotope content, 51 samples from August 2015 to July 2016 have been collected mainly on a monthly basis with few events based ...
متن کاملLabeling of Human Serum Albumin with Stable Isotope of Bromine; an in Vitro Study
Background: Possibility to trace-label albumin with isotopes results in information concerning its synthesis, breakdown, and distribution in the intra and extra cellular spaces. The iodination of albumin is a widespread procedure used in scientific studies. Bromine not only is more reactive and less expensive than iodine, but bonds more easily with many elements. Therefore, it could be a suitab...
متن کاملUses of stable isotopes in clinical diagnosis and research in the paediatric population.
The landmark experiments of Schoenheimer and Rittenberg in the 1930s provided the scientific foundation for the ensuing development and application of stable isotope techniques in clinical diagnosis and research. Stable isotopes are non-radioactive atoms of the same chemical element, which diVer only in their number of neutrons. Many elements also have radioactive (non-stable) isotopes. Aspects...
